It’s almost here! Hard to believe another year has passed, but it’s time to swamp the city and laugh as much as you can.

Unfortunately, we won’t be publishing for the festival this year. The past twelve months have seen us (editors Tim Norton & Lefa Singleton) adventuring on far distant shores… well, Western Australia anyway. It’s been a challenging year for us creatively with lots of exciting projects. It will be strange to be far away from all the action for a full festival. We recommend you head to the ever-amazing staff in the information booth at the Melbourne Town Hall for recommendations and the low down on what’s going on.

Don’t forget to head over to Trade’s Hall, where the collection of shows is easily the best you will find in one spot. It’s a great venue with plenty to explore.

In the meantime, we wish you a merry festival and look forward to updating you on new Melbourne projects soon.

This year has been an amazing festival. Sadly, it’s drawn to an end. We hope you enjoyed the festival as much as we did. On behalf of our writers, editors, staff and volunteers thanks for supporting us for another year.

Between now and next year we encourage you to get out and see as much local comedy as you can. We’re so lucky to have all this talent at our doors, and you should all take advantage while the ticket prices are cheap throughout the year!

Next year we will, unfortunately, be on hiatus and will miss not publish the magazine or here online for the 2008 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Keep an eye out for our other adventures as we head off to Perth to cover more festivals in the Western Frontier over the next twelve months.

Copy Editing

The American Copy Editors Society have been kind enough to compile this fantastic booklet of editing guidelines. It has been contributed to by a huge amount of American newspapers, and aims to be a guide to the kinds of skills needed to work in a newsroom.

It’s rather hard to read online, but if you want a comprehensive reference this is it.

your news addiction?

Excellent! SYN is recruiting newsreaders to prepare and present on-air
bulletins for 2007. Anyone under the age of 26 is welcome to apply;
training in the preparation and presentation of bulletins will be
provided.

Newsreading not only provides invaluable radio journalism experience; it
can also act as a stepping stone for current affairs reporting and
producing.

There is so much information out there on the net sometimes it’s hard to find what you’re actually looking for. One of the best places to head for advice and tips on almost any kind of writing from academic to resumes is OWL - The Purdue Online Writing Lab. It’s easy to navigate, has loads of information and is a great starting point.

Writing news or current affairs? Every journalist should be made to study this page for an hour a day before putting their fingers to the keyboard. It’s a list of expressions so over-used and over-tired that they ought to be banned for life.

Cliches presented as news are on my list of top five writing hates.

Technical writers are worth their weight in gold. If you can explain engineer-speak or computer-speak in a language the rest of us can understand, you are in high demand. I recently came accross this online resource by Ronald B. Standler, which is a good starting place for basic tips and advice on how to write well in a technical marketplace if this is an area you are interested in. Take a look!
