Walking in to a comedy show 20 minutes late is never a good look. You interrupt the feng shui of the room as you push past people to find a seat discreetly, all the time hoping you don’t draw fire from the stage, trying to get yourself in the zone but knowing that you’ve missed the crucial first few minutes where the performer establishes rapport with audience and sets the tone for on coming hilarity. Adam Vincent is a tall and confident man, which I imagine helps when you are performing to a half empty room on a cold Tuesday evening. He lurches on stage wearing an immaculately fitted suit and proceeds to greet us in a relaxed manner whilst laying out his game plan. Listing all the subjects, topics and general themes he plans to touch on, he outlines everything that you can expect from the show. Clever technique.

It’s fair to say that ventriloquism isn’t the most popular style of comedy today. It brings to mind men in cheap suits sitting on stools with their hands inside creepy dolls doing the RSL curcuit. And then there is the enchanting Nina Conti. Everything about her approach plays off the pre-conceived cliches we have about the art form.
