Paul Foot – Ash in the Attic

I’ll admit it. I’m pretty damn excited about seeing Paul Foot. His show is advertised as being directed by Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh, and I’m a pretty big Boosh Fan.

There’s a strong crowd clustered into the Cloak Room at Melbourne Town Hall, and I can already hear grown men giggling with excitement in the back row. My interest is piqued.

Out of the darkness a voice is heard, and soon we are dragged (albeit delightedly) on a whirlwind of unpredictable madness. Paul appears, a slight ball of high energy sporting the coolest mullet I’ve ever seen. He races on stage, off stage, into the audience and back behind the curtain. There are doubts, which are most strongly voiced by Paul, as to when the show actually starts.

When it does begin, the audience discovers there is a lot more to shire horses than first thought, thanks to Paul’s explanations. He feels like a cross between Dudley Moore in the 1960s and Australian comedian Flacco in the 1980s as he dances and trips across the stage, fighting with the words that stream out of his mouth at an alarming volume and speed.

The audience are teary and gasping for air as they can barely stop laughing, and although two per cent of the crowd look slightly baffled, the other 98 per cent just can’t get enough. Just when the crowd is feeling the exhaustion, Paul slows it down and tucks us into bed, reading us the bedtime stories of his “disturbances”. Although the show feels like it lags in some places, there is high emotion and a lot of laughs.

If you are a fan of things that are slightly off-kilter, join in the fun and see this “rare exotic bird”. You will come out of this show looking for your mime phone and slightly wary of shire horses. And just wait ‘til you meet Jack.
