Comicide: Work/Life Sentence

Sketch comedy can be difficult to execute, but Sydney’s comedy troupe Comicide are right on target.  An hour-long collection of skits, Work/Life Sentence contains minimal props, simple costumes, and an absolutely brilliant ensemble cast.

The sketches are fast-paced and fairly consistent, with quick changeovers that guide you swiftly from one laugh to the next.  Some acts are drawn out a little longer than others, but this doesn’t affect the flow too much as the laughs do not stop coming, from the veterinarian who claims she can talk to animals and the office workers who have no idea what it is that their company actually does, to the narcissistic talk-back radio host who decides to have a phone conversation with himself.

The cast give solid performances, and interact with precise comic timing.  There is even a DJ in the corner, playing music to mask the scene changes, so that boredom doesn’t set in.  Running for only two weeks before they shake it up again with all-new sketches, this is a show that will keep on moving, and keep you laughing non-stop; an absolute highlight of the festival.

Was this review written by the Comicide group because I can’t believe that anybody who saw this show could have a good word to say about it.

I went about a week ago and I recommend it to NOBODY. The jokes seemed to be written by primary school aged children and performed by a group of people who don’t particularly enjoy comedy or even laughing. It was unenthusiastic, sloppy and completely unfunny. I walked out about three quarters of the way through then stuck around to get my money back. The $20 cover charge was definately not worth it.

I guess the festival tried to hide this shameful show away in the depths of the RMIT Kaliede Theatre but they don’t deserve to be mentioned under the banner of The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, or even under the banner of comedy for that matter. I love to support young comedians trying to make it but someone should take these guys aside and stop them before they steal from anybody else. Save your money and put it towards other up-and-comers like Smart Casual or Josh Makinda, who both killed tiny, tiny rooms and the latter at a minute fraction of the price.

I hope that the festival comes to it’s senses and never invites Comicide back. Avoid this show like the plague.

Ah, the couple from three weeks ago who left about a third of the way through and asked for their money back, $10 each, afterwards. I remember it well, since no-one else sought a refund from me. As I told you at the time, it's a shame that you left so early — and I'm sorry you didn't enjoy what you saw.

I haven't seen Josh Makinda myself, but I can wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Smart Casual.

Don’t try and cover yourselves by saying we left a third of the way through, we left with 10 minutes to go in the hour long show, which would make it 5/6 of the way through. I can’t explain why noone else sought a refund as there was a lot of faces pulled as people left the theatre.
