Rod Quantock – The People We Should Eat First (And How To Eat Them)

I have an apology to make. In the past I have intentionally not gone to any of Rod Quantock’s shows, under the mistaken belief that his comedy was old and only for elderly generations. I was wrong. He is current, relevant, honest and hilariously brutal.

Quite rightly Quantock is known as the grandfather of Australian Comedy and not just because he is now in his 60s. He has been performing comedy for years (he was part of the first MICF) and it shows.

He is the most relaxed comedian you will see on stage. He has the audience laughing and feeling comfortable from the moment he greets them all at the door right through until the end of the performance, when he shows them out again. His interaction with the audience is so much more than a mere set-up to a joke (what’s your name? What do you do for a living?) – he genuinely wants the audience to share the joke with him.

Known for his political humour, this year Quantock tackles climate change. But he is no tree hugger. Using facts and figures in a quasi-lecture style, Quantock points out that by 2100 there will not be enough food to support the world’s population and hence the need to start eating people. Charles Darwin would be proud of this modern interpretation of his survival of the fittest theory. Quantock’s solution is to start eating people to reduce the population. He recommends recipes that, for entertainment value, leave Master Chef in the swill. The looming devastation of the planet should not be this funny.
