Let me do the Talking – Arj Barker

Ark Barker needs no introduction. Literally. He welcomed himself onto the main stage at the Melbourne Town Hall, in the familiar third-person style that has become almost a signature. Barker is a lovable rogue, with observations that are at all at once inspired and inappropriate. He’s a professional at delivering  metaphorical situation comedy – exploiting the “what-ifs” of life with laid back candor. The sell-out crowd made it clear why he is a regular favourite of Melbourne audiences, with the laughs solid throughout the show.

There’s nothing “outside of the box” in this show, but his natural ability to tell stand-alone stories and musings ensures that there is a continuous flow of punchlines and Barkerisms. It’s also obvious that the men love him – not in a sexual way (mostly), but in a man-crush sort of way. He channels the teenager in every man and the boys lap it up. His self-questioning style allows him to tackle the naughty issues, swear a bit, and pose outlandish opinions.

The show has evolved with the 21st century with iPhone App gags and the modern re-working of a Seinfeld gag, with a set-up so long that could be in the running for a guernsey in the Guinness Book of Records”. The show’s title really does say it all for the vibe of the evening – relax guys, I’ve got this. Eternally endeared to an Australian audience, Barker delivers his witticisms with the same “she’ll be right” air that leaves us secure in the knowledge that wherever he’s taking us, it’ll be sweet in the end.

My husband and I were very disappointed with the show. We did not find much of the show funny – probably only 2 gags which we laughed. I felt the show was outdated and Arj was a little lazy in his performance. Won’t see him again and $40 each too much.
