Tom Gleeson – Get It Into Ya!

Tom Gleeson has been popping up as a semi-regular guest on many television programs recently, and with good reason. Gleeson is in fine form and he brings this form to Get It Into Ya!.

Gleeson uses his show to get a few things off his chest and some issues seem to have him quite angry. Entertaining, but angry.  With his sharp observations about iPhones, neighbours, digital cameras, safe sex and medical conditions it is disappointing that Gleeson yet again resorts to tiresome jokes about being a fair-skinned red-head.

Despite being set in one of the conference rooms of the Victoria Hotel, Gleeson works the room like a traditional pub based comedy night, and the audience loves it.

Gleeson seems preoccupied that his show should be about something, or that the audience should have learned something by the end of the hour. He ought to relax, we do learn something. That Gleeson is funny. It’s all a comedy audience has ever asked for.

I found this show so tiresome. My friend took me along as she had never seen him before and it had been a few years since I saw him either. I swear it was almost exactly the same stuff.

I wasn’t very impressed with this show. While there were some moments that were genuinely funny, Gleeson also used tacky “Where ya from?” pub humour and his delivery went from being amusingly irritated to alarmingly angry. Even though he finished on a high, I was left with a slightly unpleasant taste in my mouth. Not my pick for this festival.
