Melinda Buttle – Sista Got Flow
For a debut performance at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Melinda Buttle’s show is impressively professional. Performing to around 30 people in the reasonably squishy Backstage Room at the Melbourne Town Hall, Buttle does not falter or her material fail.
A new master of self deprecating humour and metaphors, the performer captivates her audience with excellent material. From zany tales of her parents and online dating, to the playground antics she has endured during her time as a relief teacher, she draws inspiration from all areas of her life to deliver an intimate performance.
Her improvisational skills and interaction with the audience are quick, sharp and delivered with ease, confirming her as a naturally funny comic. With a twist of subtle dryness, Mel has created her own niche in the comedy market as a genuinely funny, rap battling lady comedian.
The 2008 Queensland finalist of Raw Comedy, Buttle has spent the last year and a half constructing her show, and the polished performance is evidence of this. Already a favourite of local headline acts, Buttle performed to a crowd including Josh Thomas and Peter Berner.
Perhaps the easiest way of conveying the first-rate material of Buttle’s show is this – time simply flew. When she left the stage, the audience wanted more. Here’s hoping to see Buttle in the main hall of the Melbourne Town Hall. If not next year, then certainly in following years. As one of the most promising up and comers seen at the festival this year, she definitely deserves it.

melinda is doing well.. back in perth she used to steal others material.. so glad she is writing her own now…. nice kid.. hope she makes it..
oh i remember mel from perth also… but the perth scene is very clicky and if you are not part of the crowd then you are not part of the scene.. brissie has obviously been more kinder to her….. can’t wait to see this show…
sor of agree Joel, but in Perth she used to try and please other comedians rather than please the audience…Experience propably taught her that the audience pay the money to see the show…. Having said that, It ain’t what you know in this world!!!
Mel has come a long way… some are “overnight sensations” that end up sizzling away and some have to work hard and pesist.. No doubt in my mind Mel worked hard and ignored the knockers, hense she is now in the news. One word of advise, make friends with all and sundry in the game, not just those who you think will further your career.
I’m going to see this next week. My friend saw it in Brisbane and she totally loved it. I wish more people would go and see shows like this because it’s obvious how good Australian comedians are when you see them do a full show for an hour instead of just on television shows and stuff.
congrats mel… a perth comedian qouted a couple of years back “I don’t want to be one of those comedians who make the national final of raw then do nothing” – you certainly have suprassed that particular person…. well done and good luck with your future…….
Laughing So Much, I am trying to guess who you are talking about. The only one that comes to mind is a didgaredoo player?????
I first saw Mel at RAW finals and I thought she was awesome. Excellent, personal material. I had a fantastic time at the show, one of the best I’ve seen so far.
Yes, I remember the guy you are talking about. Perth is a small fish bowl where you can hide your google fingers. When you come to Melbourne you really need to bring fresh ideas or you get found out quickly.
I love love love love love this girl. I’m going to go see the show again before the end of the festival.
who are you guys talking about it perth? 2007 final?
If Mel was a fish she would be some kind of rad fish that had great shoes and heaps of sassy awesomeness in her pants (FISHPANTS). I have no doubt she is going to become a very large fish who eats boats and stuff. Hmmm Metaphors rock!
Her voice is annoying. Almost sounds like pauline hanson.
she is just another woman comedian really who struggle to be funny…
Well done mel. great effort to get as far as you have. The Perth market was way to small for you and your talents. Apart from claire Hooper and Xavier Michaledies (apolgies to the talented alex manfrin, who would kick arse if he ever left dullsville) in the last five years, you are the only one to come out of that place and actually achieve something. Well done sister!!
ummm who cares? She’s in Melbourne doing the festival and she’s damn funny. I don’t give a crap about Perth gossip.
Very upset with XA as I have followed Mel right from her early days and she has NEVER used other peoples material, with her talent she has no need to!
Sounds like jealousy to me.
I take it will, you are not from Perth?
I caught Mel’s show last night, she has to be the funniest lady I have seen for a long time.
Mel you are the future of comedy in this country, cant wait to see more of your great talent!
could you please remove all the perth referenced material on this site. a local comedian said last night she was resposible for 80% of them using different names each time. They arn’t true and do not do anybody any justice. I think it would be only fair to melinda if they were deleted. thank you… james.
well done carly one of ur best reveiws i love the detail you have used to describe her performance it makes the reading the reveiw simply delighting …jolly good jolly goo show carly xoxo
I agree James. This is an excellent medium to talk about her SHOW… Why not go see it and then maybe write an intelligent comment.
After reading this review I am definately off to see Mel perform! Her show sounds like one of the best of the fest!
XA i NEVER write on these stupid things but you just sound so desperately bitter about someone else’s success (good luck overcoming that) i had to put a shout out for melinda. i saw the show which was a collection of anecdotes about being a school teacher, wearing a cardigan, her mum and dad, so i’m pretty sure she didn’t steal anyone else’s material this year. Why don’t you let bygones be bygones and go and hurt yourself. i’m guessing you’ve written some pretty bad original material, and can’t stand someone else doing well. FYI there’s only a few times that the incestuous cries of ‘comedians stealing material’ rumours reach mainstream – namely Robin Williams and Denis Leary, and clearly, it didn’t slow them down – so who gives a SH**
I’m not sure about all this “back in perth” talk is about, but as someone who has watched mel since she came to Brisbane I can assure everyone she has worked very hard to take her act from being funny to being brilliant. In the past year it was hard to go to an open mic room in brissie and not bump into her. She’s the funniest female performer I’ve seen.
