Matthew Kenneally Flips The Bird At The Fingerpointers
“Welcome to my bunker!” Matthew Kenneally greets us with as he takes the stage of the Acacia Room. We are, indeed, in the low-ceiling basement of the Victoria Hotel, and Matt is of sufficient height I worry he’d better not get too physical up there.
We probably all know a guy like Matt. He’s a smart 29 year-old bloke who grew up in the sticks, moved to Melbourne to live in a share-house with mates, thinks a lot about the shit going on around him and feels frustrated when he realises he doesn’t have easy answers for more than half of it.
So, what concerns Matt? Everything, pretty much, starting with his couch. Practically every big Australian and Melburnian news story of the past year is discussed. Street violence and flag-caped bogans, to Bingle in the shower and Tony Abbott’s willingness to kill. More specifically though, he’s concerned with those who point fingers in all these matters, people who seek to lay blame and scapegoat. And in this, it must be said he’s fairly even-handed with the bird-flipping he gives the finger-pointers, heaping scorn equally upon his well meaning but blinkered friends as much as on easy comedy targets such as the Australian Christian Lobby.
Highlights include a detailed explanation of Virginity Economics and the layered discourse involving racism, homophobia and how nothing much gets solved by an anti-bogan brunch. Matt’s show is predominantly about prejudice and intolerance, and how both are rampant even among those who object to prejudice and intolerance. He even comes to terms with his own hypocrisy before bringing everything back to his couch and what he’s going to do about it.
There are no easy answers, but hugging a climate change sceptic might be a start.

I’ve seen Mathew’s show a few years in a row now, and he just keeps getting better!
This year’s show was awesome – he’s really getting fast-paced political comedy down to a fine art.
Well done Matt! Really enjoyed your show!
