Late Nite Impro
There seemed to be very little Gorilla-style sabotage going on in this hi-energy and often brilliant improv extravaganza. And for a show that sells itself as Gorilla Theatre ™, with the potential for back-stabbing, strategy and alliances, I found it a pretty stock standard structure for an improv show; The Biggest Loser has more strategic flavour than this show possesses. However, this is not to downplay or dismiss the enjoyment garnered from this group. The Late Nite Impro team are pros – they keep the scenes moving, they jump in and out of characters with ease, and who doesn’t love a special guest or two? The night I was there, the guests were Claire Hooper and Lee Naimo, and they really added to the already impressive line-up.
The thing I love about improvisation is the intelligent choices. It’s too easy to go down the path of crudeness or blocking, but these guys were quick, smart and reliably funny. I would have loved to have seen more females involved, and this is only to allow a little more variety to the scenes – but the fellas were great.
The surprise laughs that one gets from clever performers are often the sweetest. Fun and fast, these are shows that, although they will change every night, the quality will remain the same. Late Night Impro have a well-oiled, experienced bunch of comedians who all add their own unique take on split-second suggestions and their unforeseeable outcomes.
