Adam Vincent – Adamland

Adam Vincent is a tall and confident man, which I imagine helps when you are performing to a half empty room on a cold Tuesday evening. He lurches on stage wearing an immaculately fitted suit and proceeds to greet us in a relaxed manner whilst laying out his game plan. Listing all the subjects, topics and general themes he plans to touch on, he outlines everything that you can expect from the show. Clever technique.

Mostly he chooses to tell stories about being unemployed in his 20’s and then delves in to the subject of his family and life in the country growing up outside of Adelaide. Nothing particularly original, but he offers just enough laughs for me to want to follow. His brother, father and mother figure heavily in his material and he veers into bold territory when he brings up his fiancé and his farcical attempts to propose to her.

Structurally, Vincent is clever, ticking all the boxes of repetition and the re-visiting of themes and ideas. However, more often than not, I found there was something crucial missing in his delivery. His style is loose and underwhelming to the point where I find my mind wandering, but then he’ll prove that wrong by hooking the audience back in with a flash of hilarious ‘wrongness’. Ultimately, this is what I wanted more of.
