Josh Earl is XXVII

Josh Earl is XXVII

Josh Earl is XXVII is a lo-fi comedy spectacular. The self-proclaimed ‘gentle comedian’ enters amid his own hand drawn hyperbole with a persona mixed of equal parts bashful indie-boy and stand-up comic arrogance. Josh has just turned 27 and doesn’t know if he is a boy or a man. Ultimately he is afraid to find that all the signs may point to boy.

Taking pointers on what it takes to be an adult from a seven year-old girl, Earl has hashed out an ideal framework to hang his show on. Diverging down various tangents such as marriage, driving or property leaves him plenty of room to fit in his eclectic material and songs. Earl’s style of comedy sits somewhere between a Lucksmith’s song and Demetri Martin, right down to the collected comedy graphs and Northcote references. I do not say this as a bad thing, as he does it very, very well.

Earl appears to be all haircut, tight black jeans and a ‘please love me’ smile, but lurking underneath is a deceptively clever performer. I loved this show, full of witty songs, sly pop culture references and just plain funny jokes. From correcting punks on the grammar printed on their clothing to telling his old high school’s graduating class they are lucky to have not lived in the dark days of researching reports on Encarta, he is razor sharp. Earl is a brainy comedian who’s not afraid to throw in a crass joke when his material is getting too clever. If this is the show of a man-child’s brain, I can only hope he never grows up.

I’ve seen Josh perform before and I didn’t really get the hype. I would smile at the end of songs but not really laugh out loud. This is the second good review I have seen of his show, does that mean he’s improved heaps or is it just that you either get him or you don’t? What did other peopel think of this show?

I thought he was awesome. My wife were in Melbourne as part of our honeymoon, and Josh’s gig was one of the highlights of that leg of our aussie tour.

It may because we were 27 at the time. It might be because we have similar issues to those expressed in Memento. It might be because we didn’t know what to expect. Who knows. But we enjoyed it and have told all friends going to Aus to check him out if they get chance.

We have tried to get friends back in the UK listening to stuff on youtube, but it is not the same.

I hadn’t laughed as hard in a long time.

I only found this site as we were trying to find the 27 song online.
