The Delusionists in Bunker 5
With all the shit going on in the world today, it’s not a complete stretch of the imagination to envisage a world where a group of five twenty-somethings are holed up in an underground bunker, hiding out from mutants and rabid pigeons on the surface. And annoying each other.
Cue The Delusionists in Bunker 5, a well-crafted show following the shenanigans of three boys and two girls hiding out in a vast bunker – complete with squash court! There’s Ben the superdork self-styled dictator; Alex, Ben’s fresh-faced innocent sidekick and the girl of his dreams; Simon, a jokey bloke with a secret passion for a plant; Steen the gangly wallflower with a sock friend; and Susie, a lonely soul who just wants some space and a little bit of love.
The script is tight and the jokes fast-flowing. For a five-person one-hour show, the characters are incredibly well-drawn – I was quickly sucked into the minutiae of everyday life down in the expansive bunker. In fact, the characters felt so real and familiar that a lot of audience members (including this reviewer) had a bit of a tear in their eyes as the show built up to what was a truly memorable ending.
A mix of physical comedy, music and traditional laughs, The Delusionists have pulled off what many acts have tried and failed to do – a rollicking narrative-based perfomance with a friendly, fun feel about it.

this sounds kinda dark, but still good. would have been good to know more about their material, but maybe I’ll go check it out myself, so job well done!
I saw the show during it’s Sydney run and it is absolutely hilarious!
In a group of girls there were more than a few tears shed at the touching ending and we definitely got our money’s worth. I’m still following The Delusionists because I want to say “told you so” when they get their own TV show!
I’ve seen these guys show for the past 2 years and this year didn’t disappoint. Strong narrative, interesting characters and a warm heart felt ending. Great job.
This is one of my favorite shows so far. The reviewer is right in saying that the characters are ‘incredibly well-drawn’. In such a short show, it’s surprising how quickly we identify with them and get to know/love them – all credit to the actors for helping us do that.
I wish them all the best for the rest of their run. If you get a chance, go and support these kids – you won’t be disappointed!
Utterly delightful! Well-developed quirky characters, a refreshingly “out of left field” plot and some hilarious and heart-warming scenes ensured that this show “stayed with me” long after the show. A nice change from being deluged with smutty one-liners which if you’re kinda old like me, you can’t remember the next day anyway. Great to see original comedy with soul by a young and talented cast. Someone give them a TV series!!
Such a refreshing delight! This was my favourite show this year. The team of young actors are incredibly talented in delivering their characters, each with their distintively different personalities and qualities. Although they do share one likeness – they are each completely adorable and lovable! Very entertaining; a breath of fresh air, clever comedy with deep and real themes. I hope they are back again next year.
