Pitching Freelance Writing

Pitching is one of the most important aspects of freelance writing. Pitching your writing to an editor is a task which can open doors for you, or shut them. In pitching, there are a few key things to keep in mind. Keep your first contact brief and to the point; if you want to know whether they are accepting submissions, ask directly and give a brief outline of what you are hoping to submit (so they can better answer your question). In a formal pitch for a specific piece, ensure you have a clear picture of their style and current content (and convey this to the editor) and are able to demonstrate how your particular piece fits within this. Don’t send an entire article straight away, send a short outline (and perhaps even a sample excerpt), along with samples of previous writing (as attachments only) or links to an online resume or examples.
