When you have finished a piece of writing it can quite often be difficult to edit or proofread the piece. It’s very difficult to see the potential faults or areas that need improvement when you have spent a chunk of time doing your best to write it well in the first place. It is important to put your work aside for a fair amount of time before attempting to pick it up again to edit or revise.
It’s also important that if you seek advice, you ask for it in a way that will allow you to get pointed, helpful feedback which enables you to improve your work. Make sure to ask anyone who reads your writing to point out what they felt was the strongest and weakest points of the piece. Was there anything they didn’t understand? How did they feel it flowed? Don’t just accept a general positive/negative response. After feedback has been offered, ask specifically what they felt the core message was, or explain what you wanted your focus to be and whether they felt this had come through. If you’ve communicated this clearly, you’re doing well.
