Princess

7 August 2006 No Comment

The Danish animated film Princess follows a revenge plot that follows a priest on his vendetta against the porn industry. Between the parameters of the film’s simple storyline, the director manages to bring a fresh perspective on revenge and, indeed, questions his audience about whether or not the morals associated with a vendetta are comparable to those of the porn industry.

The animation used in Princess is a blend of anime, CGI and handheld footage. These techniques are juxtaposed, further questioning morality and the essence of ‘realism’. Whilst the use of different visual forms places each one in direct contrast to the next, they also manage to blend quite beautifully, bringing forth both aesthetic and visceral responses.

Princess also drives at recreating styles and techniques from other film genres. The violent action scenes draw heavily from Japanese Manga, whilst the explosions seem to be an homage to gangster films of film-makers such as Martin Scorsese. This, however, does not taint these scenes or diminish their impact on the audience as they are visually encapsulating. This is partially due to the cutting-edge animation techniques, but more so because of the director’s shot selection and composition, which draws the audience into his characters without excessive dialogue or explanation. The distinct lack of dialogue focuses the audience on the stunning visual artistry of the director.
