New Orleans Music in Exile

7 August 2006 One Comment

Told entirely through those in the music industry, New Orleans Music in Exile explores the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina. This entertaining documentary tells the story of New Orleans’ jazz musicians, fundamental in creating the unique and vibrant culture that exists in their city. The film looks at the role the musicians are playing in rebuilding New Orleans after this monumental disaster.

The highlight of New Orleans Music in Exile is hearing the way that the different musicians have incorporated this disaster into their music. The majority of the musicians are now living and performing in neighbouring cities and a number of them have composed songs based around their experience during the hurricane. Throughout the film we hear these songs played underneath vision of the devastation left by the hurricane and these moments are extremely powerful.

The performances at jazz clubs throughout the film also provide a contrast and respite from the shots of destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina. Jazz fans will really appreciate this film as the musicians are phenomenal. Particular standout performances are by Cyril Neville and the ReBirth Brass Band.

By focussing on the stories of the musicians it has allowed the film-makers to narrow down on this potentially enormous topic and humanise the story. I did feel that the documentary could have connected more on an emotional level with the interviewees. We hear quick stories from musicians, music magazine editors and radio producers. But we don’t hear from anyone who has lost a friend or family member, a hook to really draw the audience in.

Overall New Orleans Music in Exile doesn’t quite sustain the entire 110-minute duration. It does, however, provide an intriguing insight into the world of these Jazz musicians and this tight knit community.
