Ben Price in Hollywood Live and Uncut

4 May 2006 2 Comments

Perhaps I shouldn’t have gone to see this show. Given that other people seemed to have an okay time and I don’t think I laughed once, I will at least attempt to be a little objective about why it didn’t appeal to me but seemed to give other people enough entertainment that they didn’t leave.

Ben Price is probably most familiar as that-guy-who-does-those-voices on Melbourne’s GOLD104. I don’t mind an impersonator, I think that you can impersonate and use mimicry to create a sense of theatre and believability that is skilled and entertaining. Unfortunately, Price doesn’t seem to have managed to master this off radio. His mock interviews, sketches and characters miss the mark. His impersonations lack stage presence, and while if you close your eyes you may believe the voice is right, mostly he’s just a bit crap. I think he missed the bit where as well as pretending to be someone, you have to try to be funny impersonating them, too.

Get me to dress up in costumes from my local costume store, and I could pretend to be famous, too. As for his racist and entirely horrible characters such as Tim Tam from Vietnam, don’t start me. Some of the voices are more on the mark than others, but I guess the message here is that Price should stick to his day job, radio clearly suits him better.

Hey whoever you are you obviously have no life, or you may just be suffering from extreme jealousy.

I get a great response from my comedy. You are maybe 1 odd one in about 1500 that saw my show and had that response. What do you think putting it in this will do?

as for accusing me of being racist, you obviously don’t know what racist really means. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races…aacording to the dictionary.

Do you see hatred in what i do with Tim Tam? I don’t think so. He is a loveable character by all who see him, obviously not you but that’s ok. He’s not racist. You need to understand what racist means before you accuse someone of it.

I know Vietnamese people that love Tim Tam, the good thing about it is it actually makes them feel very much a part of our Aussie culture. They identify with him much the way Greeks did with Wog Boy. It is a race thing but not racist at all. And if you notice i do comedy so i take the mickey out of a lot of people, i send up Indians and Italians, English. Why don’t you accuse me of being racist there? PErhaps as you are singling out the Vietnamese you may have some prejudice against them yourself. The Aussie culture is one that stirs and we do this not to put down but to have fun. It’s better than fighting with other cultures. We have a friednly joke with Kiwis, Poms, Americans, why not Vietnamese?

You need to get your head out of yr backside and realise a few things in life. To say mostly he is a bit crap…well right back at ya. You have no basis for that.

If i were you I’d be sending your CV into Coles or Safeway clearly journalism isn’t your thing. You’re way off the mark!

I’ve personally been to Ben’s show and I find his Asian impersonate extremely racist.

Yes Ben you have jokes about Kiwis, Poms, Americans and the Italians…for like 10 minutes.. and you spends the 90% of the entire show mocking Asians. Nice Cover.

I have Asian friends (Christian as well) who are very offended by your shows. You’ve made them feel worthless and unwelcome but they are too nice to say anything to you(or punch you in the face), because you are suppose to be their brother in Christ. So next time you think “oh those Asians laughed as well” think again, deep down they are hurt and hate your guts, this is the simple truth that you failed to see.

Wake you Ben, you are not a kid anymore. 99% of Asians find your acts offensive. Why make a career out of hurting other people? You call yourself a Christian yet you do things that’s not even acceptable on a worldly standard. You make Christians look bad!!
